Hij heeft een betere techniek en subtiliteit ontwikkeld met zijn indrukwekkende zang. De jaren 70 soul is nog steeds nadrukkelijk aanwezig in zijn stem. Hij is niet alleen een enorm talent aan het worden als zanger maar ook als componist, met een unieke, ronde stijl voor zowel melodieën als teksten. Hij houdt zijn soul/blues geloofsbrief in tact met een versie van “Work Song” wat hem in staat stelt om het op volle kracht op te nemen tegen een toeterende saxofoon. Ter afsluiting is er een a capella versie van “God Bless the Child,” een nummer dat voor altijd geassocieerd zal worden met Billie Holiday. Het is een gedurfde stap, en een grandioze climax op een disc die Porters ster zeker verder zal doen rijzen.
