MG Sreekumar
Malabar Gopalan Nair Sreekumar (May 25, 1957), aka M. G. Sreekumar, is an award-winning Indian playback singer, composer, and television host best known for his extensive contributions to the Malayalam film industry. One of the most popular and beloved playback singers, he has performed over 35,000 songs in several languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi and is the founder of the company KMG Musics. The son of harmonist Malabar Gopalan Nair and Harikatha musician Kamalakshi Amma, he was born in the city of Haripad, Kerala, and grew up in a musical household. His debut arrived in 1983 through a feature on the film Coolie, directed by Ashok Kumar. In 1988, M.G. Sreekumar had his big breakthrough on Priyadarshan’s Chithram with the tracks “Nagumo” and “Swaminatha,” both of which went on to achieve mainstream popularity amongst Indian audiences. In the following decades, he officiated as musical director on the films Chathurangam (2002), Thandavam (2002), and Kanchivaram (2008), and appeared on the soundtrack of Kurukshetra (2008) with the track “Oru Yathramozhiyode” alongside fellow singer Swetha. In 2016, he won Best Male Playback Singer at the Filmfare Awards South.
