Martin Owen

One of Britain's leading horn players, Martin Owen has had a strong career in film music as well as classical orchestral playing. He is principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Owen was born on September 22, 1973. He was trained at the Royal Academy of Music and has retained close ties to that institution, earning a fellowship from the school in 2006 and joining its faculty in 2008; he remained professor of horn there as of the mid-2020s. Owen gave the world premiere of Malcolm Arnold's Burlesque with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1998, he joined the Royal Philharmonic as principal horn, remaining in that position until 2008. In 2007, he performed Robert Schumann's Konzertstück at the BBC Proms, making his debut there. In 2008, Owen gave the London premiere of Elliott Carter's Horn Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and he has often championed contemporary music and performed brand new works. Owen has also been active as a pop session musician, making his recording debut in 1996 on Louis Philippe's album Jackie Girl. Owen was named principal horn of the BBC Symphony in 2008. He also served as principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2012-2013 in a contract position and holds the same position in the Britten Sinfonia and the Haffner Ensemble in Britain and the Camerata Pacifica chamber group in California. He has performed as a soloist with various major British orchestras as well as the Orquesta Nacional de España, the Bucharest Philharmonic, and the Baltic Philharmonic, among other groups. His return engagements at the Proms include a performance of Oliver Knussen's horn concerto under the composer's baton. Parallel to his classical career, Owen has appeared on more than 300 film soundtracks, many of which were recorded; his album catalog comprises more than 275 items. In 2023, he released his solo debut, performing works by Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann, and Carl Maria von Weber with the BBC Philharmonic on the Chandos label.
