Marcus Bosch
Marcus Bosch is among the most celebrated and in-demand conductors not only in his native Germany but also on the international scene. Bosch has been heralded for leading productions of major operas by Wagner and Berlioz, and his complete cycles of symphonic works by Bruckner and Dvorák.
Bosch was born on October 28, 1969, in Heidenheim, Germany, of German and Brazilian lineage. As a child, he took up several instruments, including the clarinet, double bass, piano, and organ. He continued to study piano and double bass in Heidelberg and Mannheim, where he also pursued studies in musicology and conducting. In 1990, Bosch founded vocapella, a choral and instrumental ensemble, and they released albums of Handel's Messiah, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, and Mendelssohn's Elijah. In 1993, Bosch won the first conducting competition at Baden-Württemberg. He also served from 1993 to 2002 as music director of the Beethoven Choir in Ludwigshafen.
Bosch held conducting positions with the Heidelberger Schloßfestspiele, the Theater in Pfalzbau Ludwigshafen, the Osnabrück State Theater, the Wiesbaden State Opera, and the Saarbrücken State Opera. He also conducted the Hallé Philharmonic State Orchestra and the Bünden Chamber Orchestra, before becoming the general music director of the City of Aachen in 2002, where he oversaw opera productions at the Aachen Theatre and concerts with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra. He held this position until 2012. Between 2003 and 2010, Bosch recorded the original versions of Bruckner's symphonies with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra for the audiophile label Coviello Classics. In 2010, he returned to his hometown of Heidenheim to be the artistic director of the summer opera festival, expanding the festival into an international success; he founded the Cappella Aquileia as the festival's orchestra in 2016. He also served as the director of the Flims Waldhaus concerts in Switzerland. From 2011 until 2018, Bosch was the music director of the Nuremberg Staatstheater and Staatsphilharmonie. In Nuremberg, Bosch released an acclaimed cycle of the complete symphonies and symphonic poems of Dvorák. His opera repertoire has grown to over 90 works, including Berlioz's Les Troyens and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, and the complete Ring Cycle.
In 2016, Bosch became a professor at the Musikhochschule in Munich. He is the principal guest conductor of the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Konstanz while continuing to guest-conduct around the world. In 2018, he became the conductor-in-residence with the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock. Bosch was heard on several recordings in 2020, including leading the Cappella Aquileia on recordings of violin and orchestra music by Beethoven, with Lena Neudauer on CPO, and Schumann's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, on Coviello Classics.
