About Playlist

Philip Glass, born in 1937 in Baltimore, MD, has been a leader of minimalism—along with his contemporary Steve Reich—since the end of the 1960s. The composer is singled out by a unique style created out of his knowledge of Western music (from the Middle Ages to Romanticism), of the various Indian ragas and their modes, as well as of North African rhythms which taught him the art of melodic repetition. Glass has managed to establish a reputation as a composer with a large audience of non specialists—lovers of rock and popular music—despite the controversy that his music has aroused, and has met with enough success to be used in television and film (Martin Scorsese's Kundun, Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream and Errol Morris's documentary The Fog of War still leave their mark).
