The Chicks in 10 Songs
by Shelly Ridenour
One of the most polarizing bands around, the Dixie Chicks—as of June 2020, simply The Chicks—have never toed the line so many women in country music were once expected to.
"Travelin' Soldier" from Home (2002) In 2003, The Chicks set off a culture war with this song, a sentimental ballad about a girl pining for a pen pal killed in Vietnam. It was nine days before the start of the Iraq War, and the band was playing a show in London. Before launching into this, their latest single, Natalie told the crowd "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence. And we're ashamed the president of the United States [George W. Bush] is from Texas." The crowd applauded, but the reverberations of Natalie's statement carried back across the Atlantic, kicking up a backlash that would be felt for years. Country music radio stations banned the band, onetime fans burned their albums, and the trio received death threats—but The Chicks stood firm.
"Not Ready to Make Nice" from Taking the Long Way (2006) By 2006, however, the world's take on the war had changed—and radio was, once again, ready for The Chicks. Apologies were not in order: Instead, the trio doubled down with "Not Ready to Make Nice," a gorgeous tune produced by music outlaw Rick Rubin that doesn't play coy: "It's too late to make it right, probably wouldn't if I could/ Cause I'm mad as hell and I can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should." As Natalie addresses the death threats made against her, a chorus of strings defiantly rises. The band was rewarded for standing their ground, as this became their biggest crossover hit—reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and winning both Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys.
"Daddy Lessons" with Beyoncé (2016) After performing with Beyoncé at the CMA Awards, The Chicks appeared on a remix of this zydeco-flavored single from the singer's Lemonade album. A rollicking good time, punctuated with harmonica that sounds powered by humidity, the song's spirit perfectly fits The Chicks' strong-woman MO: "'When trouble comes to town and men like me come around/ Oh, my daddy said, 'shoot,'" Natalie and Beyoncé purr like twin engines. When the party breaks down into Martie's fiddle solo from The Chicks' 2002 track "Long Time Gone"—boosted by second-line parade drums—and Beyoncé harmonizes with the trio on the lines "Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard/ They've got money but they don 't have Cash," it's American perfection.
"Gaslighter" from Gaslighter (2020) The band's first single in 13 years, this joyous track calls out an ex-lover's—presumably, Natalie's former husband, Pasdar—dishonorable actions with brutal, straight-to-the-point lines like "Boy, you know exactly what you did on my boat/ And, boy, that's exactly why you ain't comin' home." (The title is a reference to the 1944 movie Gaslight, about a woman whose husband tricks her into thinking she's crazy.) Set to a sunny guitar strum and cheerful drumbeat, and with an irresistible chorus, it's the ultimate kiss-off. It also promises that the band's latest studio album, produced by Jack Antonoff (a go-to producer for Lorde, Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey), will be full of surprising turns.
"March March" from Gaslighter (2020) With this, their third single from Gaslighter, the band reinvented as The Chicks, apparently distancing themselves from the Confederate-Era South connotations of "Dixie." The move came amidst 2020's protests against social and racial injustices, and the song itself references reproductive legislation, climate change, gun control and other hot-button issues. “Standin' with Emma and our sons and daughters,” Natalie sings, name-checking young activist Emma Gonzalez. "Watchin' our youth have to solve our problems … March, march to my own drum." Musically, it's one of the most spare tracks the band has ever recorded: a deep drum tattoo and rhythmic electronic bleep sound like an amplified heartbeat being monitored for vital signs, before giving way to haunting fiddle and urgent handclaps.
