About Playlist

Acclaimed as a prolific songwriter whose lyrics mix intense joy and sadness with the kind of hard-earned wisdom and empathy that everyone can relate to, singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams is also a gifted writer of radiant, memorable melodies. A committed, expressive singer, the Louisiana-born Williams, who grew up steeped in blues and classic country music, has boldly stretched her artistic horizons in recent years in duets with Willie Nelson and Elvis Costello and a groundbreaking, cross-genre collaboration with jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd. One of the most influential and accomplished female artists in popular music today.

The Resilience and Rebellion of Lucinda Williams

by Robert Baird

If you're looking for Lucinda Williams' worldview in her music, it can be found somewhere between "Drunken Angel," and "Get Right With God." Coupled with genuine empathy for the foibles of humanity—and respect for the allure, urgency and wreck 'n' ruin of relationships—Williams has always had a healthy awe for the powers of good and evil, a looming sense of the vigilant almighty. From the album's title to the worried cover photo, a sense of misgiving hangs over the songs on her compelling new album, Good Souls Better Angels.

On Good Souls Better Angels, Williams has further explored a new writing partnership with Overby, who co-wrote nine of the album's twelve tunes. While he said he didn't need to be listed as co-writer for his efforts, Williams insisted on sharing credit after remembering the way Tom Waits handled his collaborations with his wife Kathleen Brennan.

"Tom's always been into writing, kind of silently, quietly," says Williams about her husband. "He was always a little shy about it. And I was kind of shy about it, too, at first. But it's actually been kind of liberating, it's opened up different ideas. I'd be working on stuff and he would come up and say, 'I've got some ideas for a song, what do you think about this?'He gives me lines and the ideas behind them. I flesh them out, arrange 'em and come up with a melody."

The album's most successful ballad and perhaps most hopeful tune, "Big Black Train" is another Williams-Overby co-write, one which began with Overby suggesting that Williams write a train song, a genre filled with classics from Junior Parker's "Mystery Train" and Tom Waits' "Downtown Train," to Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia".

"I said 'Hoonnnnneeeyyy, how many songs have been written about trains? Big Black Train? What am I gonna say? No, No, No? 'But then something just clicked. I got inside of it. There's something kind of desperate about it, and now when I sing it, I start to get choked up. And I've had a few people tell me they cry when they listen to it."

An audience in tears? Asked to sum up the zeitgeist to be found in Good Souls Better Angels, what its anxious tone and dark fears mean, Williams' reply touches on the decisive emotions that have always made her work so powerful.

"It's anger and frustration, but also resilience and rebellion."
