Released in April 1970, Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon captures a very specific moment in Los Angeles, before the Manson murders robbed the city of its "innocence" and so many Laurel Canyon musicians broke up, cracked up or overdosed. Mitchell's signature open
guitar tunings, sweet folk-pop melodies and crystalline voice offer an optimistic landscape for lyrical discontent. Songs like the title track highlight an unironic embrace of domestic bliss and homespun creativity coupled with an innate desire to be free to pursue the desires of the mind and heart. "Big Yellow Taxi" decries consumerism to a buoyant beat; "Circle Game" warns of the nostalgia trap. It can all feel a little naive now, but her sway has stretched far and wide—with artists from Kate Bush to Susanna Hoffs to Prince calling Mitchell a primary influence. Fifty years later, you can still hear her DNA in the work of young artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Laura Marling and even Taylor Swift. And there's no shortage of Joni Mitchell covers in the world, but these by Brandi Carlile, Björk, k.d. lang and Cat Power are among the most visceral.
