You could count on one hand the number of those who applauded Bob Dylan's decision to plug in his acoustic guitar in the '60s. Will there be a similar reaction to Laura Marling's move to do the same on her latest album Short Movie?
In fact, the reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive. At 25 years old and with four albums already under her belt, the leader of the British nu-folk movement is without a doubt one of the most talented songwriters of her generation. It's difficult to listen to her vocal inflections without thinking of 1970s Joni Mitchell; but in 2015 you could also put Marling in the same camp as PJ Harvey's Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Her writing has also been wildly inventive, but this time her sonic and lyrical palette has been undeniably enriched by new sounds and colours discovered during her travels in America. It may be her fifth album, but Marling remains as impressive as ever.
