Schubert, Vol. 2

Denis Pascal

Hi-Res Booklet
Much as his students at the Conservatories of Lyon and Paris adore him, Denis Pascal still took the time to carve himself out a great personal career as a musician, over the course of which he has tackled a whole series of composers. After a very well-regarded first album dedicated to Schubert, this second volume confirms this charismatic pianist's closeness to that world where, as he put it, it's a matter of "obsessively evoking the passage of time, the impossibility of realising oneself, of seizing a little of our lives, like water from the stream, like love". For all that, Denis Pascal's piano is clear and lucid. Schubert's great melancholy is handled with a gentle touch; it seems ineffable and full of things unsaid. His vision isn't metaphysical, but profoundly innocent, simple, and natural, which perhaps renders it all the more moving. And more mysterious. As he says himself: "Seeing a part of ourselves in Schubert means reading without fear, heart to heart, forgetting that this is a masterpiece." It's the veiled sun, the unresolved doubts of the "ineluctable flow towards dissolution" which Denis Pascal shows us here in his dialogue with Schubert. © François Hudry/Qobuz

I Got Rhythm

David Lively

Classical - Released February 2, 2018 | La Musica

Hi-Res Booklet
The linchpin of this album is indeed the dozen beautiful Songs from Gerswhin’s Songbook, adapted by the composer himself for solo piano for some of his countless songs. But far from being a blend of jazz melodies played away on a piano, this extraordinary collection oscillates between jazzy languages - true - and Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, sometimes ragtime, with a pianistic writing of flawless flair, truly impeccable writing, and a real joy for both the pianist and the listener. Around this linchpin, David Lively has constructed a magnificent array of American works from Ives to Joplin for the oldest, to William Bolcom, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and even Eliott Carter for the most recent − and probably the most avant-garde of all, in fact it is the time the album forays into avant-garde material, may the anti-avant-garde be reassured! The range from Ives – him too a pioneer before his time, whose 1919 South Paw Pitching is an extraordinary moment of modernity and farce − to Carter is immense, but the language of American music indeed comes through, throughout the album. Just as lively as the pianist’s name suggests! © SM/Qobuz

Benedetto Ferrari: Musiche Varie a voce sola, libri I, II & III

Philippe Jaroussky

Classical - Released January 12, 2018 | La Musica

Hi-Res
This re-release of an album recorded in 2003 and for a long, long time unavailable on the market - sometimes it can be found on sale for eye-watering sums - is the vision supplied by Philippe Jaroussky and the musicians of the Artaserse ensemble, of the 14 concert airs (and what airs!) written by Benedetto Ferrari (1603-1681). While he is not very well known today, Ferrari was a great star in his day, and one might well suspect that the final duet from L'incoronazione di Poppea, signed by Monteverdi - the extraordinarily moving Pur ti miro, pur ti godo  - might well have been written by Ferrari. Alas, none of his own operas have survived, but we still know three books of airs by Ferrari: the Musiche varie a voce sola (published in Venice in 1633, 1637 and 1641), from which Jaroussky has made this judicious selection. If the musical differences between the airs do not necessarily jump out at the listener at first, no-one can deny the virtuosity of the young Jaroussky on display here - he was 25 years old at the time, and he had not yet won the numerous awards which would propel his career onwards, starting with the 2004 "Victoire de la Musique".  But it was all already there... © SM/Qobuz
