The Roots Of Dub

King Tubby

Reggae - Released February 21, 2014 | Greensleeves

King Tubby's dub art began to flower on remixes for producer Bunny Lee. The engineer treated hundreds of Lee productions between 1973-1975, establishing dub as a independent style in reggae music in the process. While protégés and future dub stars Prince Jammy and Scientist would eventually remix some of the Lee dub tracks under Tubby's name, the sides on Roots of Dub are all done by Tubby himself. As the title implies, one hears the beginnings of his original dub style: a soundscape made up more by spare yet innovative deconstructions of the original sides than by the many added sound effects heard on future mixes. And while a handful of Tubby discs suffer from second-rate material, this collection stands out with some of the choicest of Lee's rhythm tracks. No small credit for this quality goes to Lee's amazing early reggae house band, the Aggrovators, which featured bassist Robbie Shakepeare, drummer Carlton "Santa" Davis, and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, among others. A fine introduction to this artist's catalog. Dub From The Roots

King Tubby

Reggae - Released February 21, 2014 | Greensleeves

Though it's a topic of great debate among reggae enthusiasts as to who actually invented the concept and subsequent genre of dub, it's inarguable that King Tubby, if not the creator of dub, is at the very least one of its most valuable innovators. Tubby's distinct remix style touched almost all major (and many lesser-known) players in the golden age of '70s roots reggae. Tirelessly prolific, Tubby accrued untold stockpiles of mixes and dubplates that saw eventual release over the years. Originally released in 1975, Dub from the Roots is an excellent example of Tubby's brilliant mastery of the mixing board and use of production as an invaluable instrument in and of itself. The compilation's 14 tracks swim in the grainy, glorious wash of reverb and delay that defined early dub, with Tubby isolating the various elements of the songs in a nearly scientific manner, dissecting classic rhythms and reshaping them into new, exciting forms track after track. © Fred Thomas /TiVo

Nyah Man Chant

Bushman

Reggae - Released November 6, 2012 | Greensleeves

Anyone who thought roots reggae was dead in the late 1990s had to have second thoughts upon hearing this album, the debut from an excellent young singer who calls himself Bushman. By any standard, this is a classic; a collection of Steelie & Clevie-produced tracks that use the technology of the 1990s to re-create classic rhythms and textures of the 1970s and 1980s (with the help of real live 1970s and 1980s musicians like Earl "Chinna" Smith, Dean Fraser, and Vin Gordon). There's a nice mix of musical styles here, from the archaic one-drop of the title track to the dubwise rockers of "Man a Lion" and the bubbling dancehall rhythms of "Rude Boy Life." Bushman himself is a fine and expressive singer with a rich, chesty voice and a style of delivery that rides every rhythm with ease while keeping emotive acrobatics to a minimum. Caveat emptor: the Greensleeves 25th-anniversary reissue has a note on the back cover indicating that the album's playing time is 70:38; in fact, it's 46:39. But since the reissue is sold at midprice, no one who is misled by the error is likely to get upset. Even at half the length, this would be an essential purchase for most reggae fans. © Rick Anderson /TiVo
