Trip Hop - Released April 17, 2020 | Casamance

Kognitif made his mark in 2014 with this debut album, positioning him on the same level as big names in the French trip hop scene, up there with the likes of DJ Cam, Kid Loco and Wax Tailor. Six years later, Cyril Capra (his real name) has re-released this album in an enhanced version. A sucker for the genre ever since listening to Portishead, his trip hop often drifts towards jazz, as proved by the two gems So Let’s Begin and Whiskey Lullaby (with a Galt MacDermot-esque piano), both featuring Scottish singer Jeanette Robertson who he met on Facebook. We also find In da Mood with its laidback Tommy Guerro-style atmosphere as well as a 2020 version of his hit Bande de dégénérés, which samples Perry Botkin Jr.’s oriental guitar from the soundtrack to Irving Lerner’s Murder by Contract. Four groovy unreleased tracks (Need to Be Love, Mama Love, Moonchild and Peace to My World) complete this rerelease - an album which should be classed amongst the best in the French trip hop category. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
