Following 2014's full-length Unknown Memory, Swedish rapper Yung Lean issued his third LP, Stranger, a hazy narcotic that's ideal for altered states or simply lulling oneself to sleep. While the production provided by Yung Gud improves upon its predecessor, Stranger is hypnotic in a way that anesthetizes rather than enthralls. Icy and detached, it has some highlights that pull listeners out of the fog. "Red Bottom Sky" is a rare tender pop moment that betrays Lean's attempts to be hardcore, instead resulting in an almost precious effect. "Hunting My Own Skin" is similarly "upbeat," riding a catchy melody that's the most buoyant on the album. The rest of Stranger maintains a steady, low-energy flow, as Lean raps about drugs, sex, and his mental state. Album closer "Yellowman" -- inspired by The King in Yellow -- is an atmospheric journey through Lean's psyche, linking the short stories to his mental health state. Stranger has its cloud-rap niche and should please listeners eager to enter this world, but casual rap fans should arm themselves with enough patience and caffeine before taking the plunge. © Neil Z. Following his very personal and introspective 2017 album Stranger, on which he opened up about his overdose and his time spent in a psychiatric ward, Yung Lean is back with his third mixtape Poison Ivy. On this 8-track record Lean shows that he is still developing his own sound and that he has moved towards more Pop-Trap influences, putting his own melancholy spin on the genre. Despite this move towards a more Trap style Poison Ivy is still heavily rooted in Cloud Rap, as we can hear through the Lo-Fi production of the record. Produced by Whitearmor, a regular collaborator with Lean, the album is filled from start to finish with dreamy production which threatens to send you into a daze. The opening track, happy feet, could easily be mistaken for the theme tune to the Minecraft video game before Lean comes in with his bars. The playful production and Lean’s melancholy and hazy voice give the album a surreal feel, the track trashy being one of the best examples of this, along with a certain weightlessness which conjures up space-like imagery. There is something enchanting about this release from the young Swede. © Euan Decourt/Qobuz
