The Feeling

Drawing heavily from the rich harmonies and melodies of '70s soft rock, British quintet the Feeling includes vocalist/guitarist Dan Gillespie-Sells (previously of Scottish pop/rock act Speedway), bassist Richard Jones, guitarist Kevin Jeremiah, keyboardist Ciaran Jeremiah, and drummer Paul Stewart. Former students of the Brit School of Performing Arts in Croydon, the quintet initially met in 1995 and went on to perform as Super Fly, a resident cover band playing at La Tania Ski Resort in the French Alps. The bandmembers soon realized they wanted to create their own classic rock-inspired pop and, upon returning home in 2004, rechristened themselves the Feeling. One month after their return, the Feeling landed a record deal. With the backing of Island Records, their polished debut, Twelve Stops and Home, was released in the U.K. in June 2006, where it charted three Top Ten U.K. singles ("Sewn," "Fill My Little World," "Never Be Lonely") and garnered a Brit Award nomination. The album was re-released on the Cherry Tree/Interscope label the following year in America -- complete with revised cover art and a retooled track listing. In the U.K., the band's popularity continued to soar, and their sophomore effort, Join with Us, topped the national charts upon its release in February 2008. In 2011, their third album, Together We Were Made, peaked at number 22 in the U.K. while featuring guest vocals from Róisín Murphy and Jones' wife, Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Later that year, Singles: 2006-2011 was released, containing all 11 singles from their three studio albums to date. Two years later, the Feeling returned with a fourth studio outing, 2013's Boy Cried Wolf, themed around the breakup of Gillespie-Sells' five-year relationship. Although it charted moderately in the U.K., the record received positive reviews. Partially crowdfunded, 2016's self-titled album was recorded live in the studio over a brief ten-day period in an attempt to better capture the energy of the band's live shows. It featured the single "Wicked Heart," and was issued on their own Little World label. Following a tour in support of the record, the Feeling went on a brief hiatus before returning to play the occasional gig over the next few years. During this time, Gillespie-Sells worked with the dramatist Tom McRae to create music for Everybody's Talking About Jamie, which debuted in Sheffield in 2017. The stage musical went on to receive an Olivier nomination and saw a film adaptation in 2021, for which Gillespie-Sells and McRae produced further music, including "This Was Me," which the Feeling released as single in September 2021. May 2022 saw the release of the band's sixth studio album, Loss. Hope. Love, which proved to be their last for Island. This was followed in October 2023, on Little World, by Live in London, a document of a late 2022 date at Shepherd's Bush Empire. The set's encore featured Ellis-Bextor on a version of "Leave Me Out of It," reprising her role from 2011's Together We Were Made. Sessions for the Feeling's seventh studio album took place in San Vito Dei Normanni, a town in Puglia, southern Italy. The resultant San Vito appeared in April 2024 and included the pedal steel-drenched, Americana-tinged single "I Won't Sleep Tonight" with Lucie Silvas on guest vocals.
