The Deer

Texas combo the Deer write literate melodic songs that veer between sparse indie folk and sophisticated, lush pop. They established their mix of spellbinding harmonies and detailed arrangements over a pair of independent releases in the mid-2010s before signing with the Keeled Scales label. Their 2019 label debut, Do No Harm, was something of a breakout for the group and they spent much of the subsequent pandemic years recording two new albums, the first of which, The Beautiful Undead, was released in 2022. Formed by a group of friends in the Texas Hill Country town of San Marcos, the band was initially built around singer/songwriter Grace Rowland (née Grace Park) and released a 2013 album, An Argument for Observation, as Grace Park & the Deer. By 2015, they were known simply as the Deer and featured a quartet lineup of Rowland and multi-instrumentalists Jesse Dalton, Michael McLeod, and Alan Eckert. They recorded two albums in quick succession, 2015's On the Essence of the Indomitable Spirit and 2016's Tempest & Rapture, and soon graduated from regional festivals to national tours supporting acts like the Head and the Heart and Big Thief. In 2019 the Deer added new member Noah Jeffries and joined the roster of Austin-based indie Keeled Scales which released Do No Harm. Poised for a period of extensive touring, they were instead grounded by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and turned their energy toward recording new material. Amid the global tumult, the Deer enjoyed a burst of creativity and recorded two entire albums' worth of new material. The first to see release was the lush and moody The Beautiful Undead in September 2022.
