Super Duper

Nashville-based producer Josh Hawkins creates accessible and euphoric 21st century electronic music, often laden with '80s pop motifs and a hip-hop backbone. At age 14, Hawkins began to experiment with online music writing tools, ultimately inspiring him to study theory and audio production. His earliest music-related job led to him composing for a number of advertisements. After two years in the role, he decided to focus his attention on a personal music project, eventually naming it Super Duper. In 2012, some of his earliest efforts were posted online, including remixes of material by established artists. The next few years saw him produce recordings by indie pop and hip-hop acts, facets of which began to infiltrate the Super Duper sound. Early summer 2015 brought his first live show ahead of the release of his debut EP, Sessions, Vol. 1. A breakthrough of sorts came with the July 2016 single "Angela" -- a track written about Hawkins' wife -- which found its way onto the high-profile play lists of various streaming services. This opened the door to a recording schedule that was increasingly collaborative, resulting in a run of mid-2017 single releases including guest spots from artists such as Daniella Mason, Louis Johnson, REMMI, and Quinn Lewis. Spring 2018 and 2019 brought the VHS and Vessels EPs, respectively, before Hawkins closed out the decade with the urgent and explosive single "Montage." By this point, Super Duper's music was being widely synced to major brand campaigns and used in TV and film soundtracks. His remix of Bob Marley's "Sun Is Shining" was included in Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7, but not before his first release for Fader appeared, the Prelude EP. In November 2020, the label issued the sprawling 20-track debut Super Duper full-length album, Hallelujah! The record grew from material initially composed during a March 2019 songwriting workshop and featured the ideas of many other Nashville-based producers and artists, as well as guest performances from Lonas and Bre Kennedy.
