Summer Cannibals

Summer Cannibals are a no-frills rock & roll outfit befitting the Patti Smith song from which they take their name. They emerged out of Portland, Oregon's burgeoning indie scene with a pair of riffy, punk-infused independent releases before joining the Kill Rock Stars roster for 2016's well-received Full of It. After scrapping the completed sessions for their fourth album, the band took matters into their own hands and recorded 2019's Can't Tell Me No themselves. Formed by singer/guitarist Jessica Boudreaux in 2012, Summer Cannibals made their album debut in 2013 with No Makeup, a lo-fi mix of fuzzy garage pop and riffy punk-influenced rock that was released on their own label, New Moss Records. For their follow-up, they hired respected Portland engineer Larry Crane and recorded 2015's Show Us Your Mind, further dialing in on their core rock sound. After two solid releases and countless tours, they signed with famed Northwest indie Kill Rock Stars, who paired them with Chris Woodhouse (Wild Flag, Thee Oh Sees) to record their label debut. By this point, Boudreaux had shuffled through a handful of lineups, finally landing on a trio format that included bassist Jenny Logan and drummer Devon Shirley. Summer Cannibals' third LP, Full of It, was released in the spring of 2016. Over the next two years, the band continued to tour and work on new material. With a completed album already in the bag, Boudreaux decided to scrap the entire thing and start over from scratch. Having escaped an abusive personal and creative partnership, she and her bandmates set out producing and engineering the album on their own. The resulting release, Can't Tell Me No, was released in 2019 by the Tiny Engines label.
