Sujatha

Boasting an extensive catalog of over 2,000 songs sung in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Banaga, Hindi, and Marathi, Indian playback singer Sujatha is considered one of the most popular and versatile artists in the film industry. Born Sujatha Mohan on March 31, 1963, in Kochi, Kerala, she first jumped to fame as Baby Sujatha in the 1970s accompanying K. J. Yesudas on tour and later made her official debut with the song "Kannezhuthy Pottuthottu," included in the soundtrack for the 1975 film Tourist Bungalow. Over the next few years, she worked with renowned music director Ilaiyaraaja on Tamil films such as Kavikkuyil (1977), Gayathri (1977), and Johnny (1980), and would later take a break from her busy recording schedule to focus on her marriage. Throughout the early 1990s, Sujatha developed a fruitful creative partnership with composer A.R. Rahman, who had her sing on Gentleman (1993) and Minsaara Kanavu (1997), two films that helped her achieve both popular and critical acclaim through songs like "Poo Pookum Osai" and "En Veetil Thottathil." During this time, she also recorded her fair share of songs in Hindi, with the song "Roja Jaaneman" from 1992's Roja becoming one of the biggest hits of her career. The early aughts found the seasoned performer collaborating extensively with composer Vidyasagar on popular tracks such as "Kokkara Kokkarakko" from the 2004 sports action film Ghilli. In 2021, Sujatha's contributions to the South Indian film industry were recognized with a Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
