Staples Jr. Singers

So reminiscent of the Staple Singers that they took their name from a description used by those who caught their earlier performances, the Staples Jr. Singers were a sibling gospel-soul group from Mississippi. Their discography is limited to a couple singles and an album, When Do We Get Paid (1975). Although the Staples Jr. Singers were inspired most by their namesake's purer gospel recordings, their studio output happened to resemble the group's later, more R&B-oriented sound. Like their elders, they also balanced messages of religious faith with those of equality. The Staples Jr. Singers ceased recording by the end of the '70s, but members have remained active in other groups. The group that became known as the Staples Jr. Singers formed as youngsters in 1967. The lineup evolved to include singers Edward, Annie, and Cleveland, guitarist/singer A.R.C., and bassist Ronnell, all members of the Brown family from Aberdeen, Mississippi. They grew up listening to and performing traditional gospel. The Browns played locally in churches and homes and at schools, and eventually toured the South and Midwest. In 1974, when most of the Browns were in their mid-teens, they made their recorded debut on the Brenda label with a 7" single consisting of "Waiting for the Trumpet to Sound" and "We Got a Race to Run," originals respectively written by Edward and Annie. It was followed the next year by the Brenda release When Do We Get Paid. Cut in one day (with Corl Walker on drums), it ranged from joyous soul to hypnotic blues, and was highlighted by the ruminative title song, a plea for equality. The Browns sold copies at performances and out of their house. A second single, released on the Praise label, followed in 1979. The Browns have continued to perform and record with other groups such as the Caldwell Singers (featuring Annie Brown, known as Annie Brown Caldwell) and the Sensational Brown Brothers. Ronnell Brown died in 2011. In 2019, the Luaka Bop label included the B-side of the Staples Jr. Singers' debut single on the compilation The Time for Peace Is Now. This led to a Luaka Bop reissue of When Do We Get Paid in 2022. Edward, Annie, Cleveland, and A.R.C., joined by other family members, reconfigured the Staples Jr. Singers for a handful of appearances in support of the re-release.
