Founded in 2001, the Sacconi Quartet has become one of the leading string ensembles in the U.K., and its innovative programs have been well received by local and international audiences. The group was formed at the Royal College of Music, with which it continues to be associated, and it established its own chamber music festival in Folkestone, Kent in 2008. That same year, the group appeared at the Liceo de Cámara Madrid, and in 2009 performed at both at the Concerts du Midi in Brussels and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany. The Sacconi Quartet has toured the U.K. and Europe, and visited Amman, Jordan in 2009, sponsored by the British Council. In addition to the standard string quartet repertoire of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, and Smetana, the Sacconi Quartet has recorded much contemporary music, including works by Graham Fitkin, John McCabe, and Jonathan Dove. The Sacconi Quartet also collaborates with other artists, including the Wihan Quartet, with whom it played George Enescu's Octet, and clarinetist Robert Plane, who performed with the quartet in a tour of the U.K. In 2015, the group presented HEARTFELT, a project designed to bring Beethoven's String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132 into a multimedia experience that connected listeners' heartbeats through electronic devices. ~ Blair Sanderson
