Rap/Hip-Hop - Released January 10, 2020 | Quando Rondo, LLC - Never Broke Again, LLC - Atlantic

Hi-Res
After rising to enormous success with three solid mixtapes released in quick succession, Georgia-born rapper Quando Rondo sharpened his talents for his official studio debut, QPac. Over the course of the album's 18 songs, Quando expands on the sung/rapped style he broke through with. Trap pop productions like "Dripped Out" and the Polo G-featuring "Marvelous" offer up R&B-tinged piano loops and laid-back beats as a foundation for Quando's fluid, melodic flows. Songs like "Bad Vibe" are pure, hedonistic fun, with 2 Chainz and A Boogie wit da Hoodie stopping by to add to the rhymes about sex, wealth, and success. "Real Love" is one of the more interesting production moments on the album, with a throwback beat that sits amid more party-ready songs like the codeine anthem "Double C's." Easily the rapper's most versatile collection up to this point, QPac displays more versatility and considered production choices than his great but sometimes monotonous mixtapes. ~ Fred Thomas

Rap/Hip-Hop - Released September 24, 2018 | QRN - Never Broke Again, LLC - Atlantic Records

Hi-Res
Savannah, Georgia rap phenom Quando Rondo's success seemed almost pre-ordained. Just 19 years old when his first mixtape arrived, the knowingly titled Life B4 Fame was an immediate breakthrough, exposing millions of new fans to Quando's introspective lyrics and hard flows that loosely concealed R&B melodicism. Just five months after Life B4 Fame, the rapper signed with high-profile Atlantic subsidiary Never Broke Again and returned with second mixtape Life After Fame. While five months is a relatively short span of time, Quando sounds like he's been through a transformation. His style hasn't changed too much -- he's still delivering intense flows with traces of wistful R&B in his rap-singing and beats that often lean on snippets of forlorn piano. More than a switch up in styles, the lyrical content on Life After Fame finds Quando grappling with just that -- fake friends, opportunists, fans' overwhelming expectations, and feeling like a star almost overnight. Standout tracks are plentiful right out of the gate with the hungry autobiographical track "Baac to the Basics" leading into the enormous JayDa Youngan collaboration "Thuggin' for Real." The captivating "Rich Homie Quando" features Rich Homie Quan trading verses with Quando about their journeys to the top. Dense production makes for more interesting beats, adding layers of complexity and a sense of searching to Quando's non-stop bars. Though his style doesn't sound directly influenced by the greats, the meeting of passionate lyrical styles and rich production recalls the urgent spirit of late-'90s rap. Life After Fame pushes beyond cookie-cutter beats and thoughtless vaunting, putting Quando Rondo in place to join the lineage of rappers who aren't just famous but exceptional. ~ Fred Thomas

Rap/Hip-Hop - Released May 10, 2019 | Quando Rondo, LLC - Never Broke Again, LLC - Atlantic

Savannah, Georgia rapper Quando Rondo developed quickly on his mixtapes, polishing up his mesh of Auto-Tuned hooks and melodic delivery. From the Neighborhood to the Stage is Quando's first proper studio album, building on the strength of several viral singles. The production is cleaner and feels more driven than earlier material, though he still gravitates towards moody piano loops and beats that combine meaty trap drums with softly creeping R&B elements. The rapper stays in one of two gears for much of the album: aggressive and threat-heavy flexing ("Out the Gym," "Where I'm From") or mournfully reflecting on all the hardships he had to overcome ("Imperfect Flower," "Emotional Way of Thinking"). He excels at both, but similar tempos, melodies, and production twists tend to blur songs of both types into one another. From the Neighborhood to the Stage rises above its limited range with solid features from Shy Glizzy, Polo G, and BlocBoy JB as well as a detour into sincere heartbroken anguish on "Scarred from Love." ~ Fred Thomas
