More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into one- or two-chord vamps that serve as broad thoroughfares for his solos; without having to twist through a maze of chord changes, White can kick back, close his eyes, and let long, liquid lines flow. This is, of course, a pretty standard formula among easy listening artists, but White shows an unusual ability to keep things interesting while cruising through open musical vistas. Nothing particularly stands out, nothing detracts or distracts; with the rhythm on autopilot and the wind of White's acoustic guitar blowing past, it's a smooth ride all the way. ~ Robert L. For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so adult contemporary). For many of the songs White chooses, the arrangements, albeit a bit sugary, transfer well, and create very soothing, clean pieces of music that could be used in any setting where being inoffensively unmemorable is a priority. But for his version of "Hit the Road Jack," though he uses just his guitar, an upright bass, some finger-snapping, and a male vocal quartet in an attempt to sound bluesy, he still loses a lot of the urgency and instinct that made Ray Charles' rendition so affecting and great. By moving from the soul and emotion of the late pianist and singer towards something more universally "palatable," White ends up not properly respecting the contributions and innovations Ray Charles brought to music, which is unfortunate, because honoring his idols was most assuredly his purpose in making this album. The record's not a failure by any stretch: there's still plenty of smooth jazz to carry the audience through the quiet hours of the day, but because Playin' Favourites is a cover album, and it doesn't do all of the songs included on it quite enough justice, it ends up falling a little short. ~ Marisa Brown

Peter White's 14th studio effort, 2014's Smile, features more of the British guitarist's romantic, uplifting smooth jazz. This is White's third album of all-original material following 2009's Good Day and 2012's Here We Go. Joining White here is a bevy of big-name guest artists, including vocalist Mindi Abair, trumpeter Rick Braun, saxophonist Euge Groove, and others. Also backing White are such longtime collaborators as keyboardist Philippe Saisse, bassist Nate Phillips, and percussionist Ramon Yslas. White's original approach to smooth jazz has worked quite well for him, and Smile is no exception. As the title implies, these are largely upbeat, brightly melodic tunes that showcase White's knack for airy, often Latin-influenced songs that soar on his crisp guitar lines. We also get plenty of groove-oriented, R&B-infused cuts like "Head Over Heels," "Hold Me Close," and the layered, trip-hop-infused "Beautiful Love." White also achieves a pleasant balance between the acoustic, electric, and electronic sounds on the album that never moves too far in any one direction. Instead, each song is deftly arranged with just the right instrumentation and improvisation to keep things interesting. Ultimately, by sticking to his own material on Smile, White has offered something new and engaging that will certainly appeal to new and longtime fans alike. ~ Matt Collar
