Native Soul

South African duo Native Soul make slowly developing, experimental dance tracks that echo the steady tempos and sonic palette of amapiano, but are dark and tense like gqom. Their mainly instrumental full-length debut, Teenage Dreams, appeared in 2021. Kgothatso Tshabalala and Zakhele Mhlanga met in 2016 and had individually made various types of hip-hop and dance music before they formed Native Soul in 2019 and decided to focus on making amapiano, which had begun to take over the South African music scene. Maintaining the slower, shaker-heavy rhythms of the style, the duo's music has less of a resemblance to deep house than other amapiano artists, going for more sinister moods. Both musicians reside in the Pitori area surrounding the city of Pretoria, but typically work on music individually and collaborate online, due to physical distance. During their occasional in-person studio sessions, Mhlanga plays keyboards and Tshabalala handles the drums. Native Soul guested on recordings by fellow amapiano duo Ubuntu Brothers, and made their full-length debut with 2021's Teenage Dreams, issued by Awesome Tapes from Africa.
