Blue Sky - Night Thunder is one of the great albums completed by cowboy singer Michael Martin Murphey in the '70s, when he was simply known as Michael Murphey and his career was just beginning. He wrote or co-wrote every song on this recording. Fans will find many of their old favorites on this gold album, including his big hit "Carolina in the Pines" and maybe his most popular song of all time, "Wildfire." This album originally appeared on the market in 1975, but was re-released on compact disc in 1990. Murphey first drew plenty of public attention as a songwriter, and earned a name for himself writing songs for country singer Kenny Rogers. Murphey was soon rubbing elbows with artists like John Denver and Willie Nelson. Listeners will spot the influences of many singers on Blue Sky - Night Thunder, but that doesn't cover the sound and talent of the main man behind each song, Michael Martin Murphey. © Charlotte Dillon /TiVo

This is a fair to middling 12-cut collection of Michael Martin Murphey's best material as licensed from Liberty (Capitol/EMI). In fact, it's identical in material and artwork to the collection of the same name released by EMI America in 1982. That doesn't take away from it at all, since some of the stuff here like "Geronimo's Cadillac" and "Wildfire" come from the very best of Murphey's earliest years. Don't look for any of the Sagebrush Symphony material, or anything from the more familiar Warner years because it's not here. This set was put together after Murphey left the label for greener pastures. Still, one can't help but admire the real songwriter and storyteller he was during this time, even if some of the later '70s stuff is almost pure schmaltz. Look to the aforementioned tracks, the crossover AOR smash "What's Forever For" that rivaled "Wildfire" as his most successful single ever, and "Carolina in the Pines" as stellar examples of '70s singer/songwriter fare at its best. © Thom Jurek /TiVo

After all of Michael Martin Murphey's material is taken into consideration, Geronimo's Cadillac comes out on top as one of his finest albums, even though his "cosmic cowboy" persona was yet to be developed. The title track was Murphey's first Top 40 hit, later covered by Cher and Hoyt Axton, while the Monkees eventually sang their own version of "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" But the most relevant aspect of Geronimo's Cadillac is the fact that it merges Murphey's slight left of center country sound with a little bit of gospel in a few places, giving his material greater depth and a genuine "reflective" quality that was often absent from commonplace country music. Tracks like "Backslider's Wine," "Calico Silver," and "Boy From the Country" all contain a unique musical complexion inspired by Murphey's voice and by the simplicity of the harmonica and mandolin. Later albums expose more of Murphey's penchant for being pensive and openly contemplative but, as a debut, Geronimo's Cadillac, with its three parts country to one part AM rock, is an enjoyable album as well as a worthy indication as to what kind of artist Michael Martin Murphey would soon become. © Mike DeGagne /TiVo
