Maylee Todd

Multidisciplinary artist Maylee Todd is hard to pin down stylistically. With a roving eye and gently sung vocals, she's bounced from bossa nova-inspired easy pop to disco with a live band, electronic pop to modern R&B and retro-soul. Her 2010 album Choose Your Own Adventure served notice that she wasn't beholden to any one genre, and further releases like 2017's assured Acts of Love jumped happily from sound to sound on each song. 2022's Maloo flipped that formula on its head and delved deeply into science fiction electro ballads with equally impressive results. The Toronto native got her start in comedy and performance art, working at Second City and on her own, then segued into music. She sang and played guitar with the pop collective Henri Fabergé & the Adorables, appearing on their self-titled album in 2006. Collaboration with the electro-pop group Woodhands followed, and she guested on both their 2008 album Heart Attack and its 2010 follow-up, Remorsecapade. She had begun working on her own music by this point, and in 2010 released Choose Your Own Adventure on the Do Right label. The record combined elements of laid-back soul, bossa nova, and summery easy pop, topped off by Todd's gently heartfelt vocals. Her next single, 2012's "Hieroglyphics," brought some disco influence to the fore, even sporting a mix by famed disco digger Kon (of Kon & Amir). 2013's album Escapology paired Todd's songs with a loose, live band sound that again was inspired by soul, disco, and pop. She maintained a steady string of performances and branched out into larger events. In the summer, she launched Maylee Todd's Musical Planetarium at The Great Hall Toronto as part of the city's SummerWorks program. It turned out so well that she began work on a new installation/event. Titled Virtual Womb, the multimedia experience was made up of projections, live video, 3D projection mapping, and live music from Todd. Visitors entered the room through a simulated vulva, then laid on the floor to experience the projections and music. The sounds were drawn from the music that became Todd's next album. A 2015 single ("Lonely"/"Poetry [Of Intuition]") showed a much stronger electronic music influence. 2017's Acts of Love followed and delved into techno, disco, late-night R&B, and melancholy modern soul. Meanwhile, Todd took the Virtual Womb on the road, traveling to Vancouver, the Philippines, and another space in Toronto. Once Todd went back to focusing on music after moving to Los Angeles, she signed up with Stones Throw Records and began work on her fourth album. Inspired by time spent investigating virtual reality during the pandemic, the album revolves around the avatar she created named Maloo, and the songs are a series of sparse electronic ballads sung from their perspective, some of them made on the Yamaha Tenori-On sequencer. Co-produced by Kyvita, Maloo was released in March 2022.
