Marcel Dettmann

A longtime resident DJ at prestigious Berlin techno club Berghain, Marcel Dettmann has received much acclaim for his hard-driving mix sessions as well as his subtly inventive original productions. An employee at Berlin's famed Hard Wax record store (founded by Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel), Dettmann possesses an extensive knowledge of techno's history, and his loud, intense DJ sets showcase the genre's Detroit and Chicago roots as well as the work of his peers and labelmates. His own tracks tend to be stripped down and atmospheric, but he has his share of straightforward bangers as well. Raised on new wave and industrial, Dettmann got into techno during the mid-'90s and began selling records from home, since there were no shops that sold electronic music where he grew up. He began frequenting Berlin clubs such as Tresor and E-Werk, and landed a DJ gig at Ostgut. He then landed his job at Hard Wax and moved to Berlin. After becoming a resident at Ostgut's successor Berghain, Dettmann began producing tracks for the club's label Ostgut Ton (often in collaboration with fellow resident Ben Klock), in addition to forming his own Marcel Dettmann Records in 2006. His first mix CD was 2008's Berghain 02, and his debut full-length Dettmann arrived in 2010. Second mix disc Conducted was released by Music Man in 2011, and singles appeared on additional labels such as Kontra-Musik and Modeselektor's 50 Weapons. Dettmann II arrived in 2013, followed by mixes Fabric 77 (2014) and DJ-Kicks (2016). In 2017, Dettmann and Klock released Phantom Studies on Ostgut Ton.
