Like some of the output from kindred spirits and collaborators in the extended Night Slugs family, including Kelela and Fatima Al Qadiri, Yasmine Dubois' work as Lafawndah could be classified as intimate club music and evades strict categorization. As a child, she lived in Paris and Tehran, later returned to Paris (where she studied art at the Sorbonne), and subsequently based herself out of Mexico City (where she played in the band Nidada), Brooklyn, and Los Angeles. Her self-titled debut EP, recorded during a monthlong stay on Guadeloupe, arrived in 2014. The same year, she granted a hushed-turned-heated vocal to Teengirl Fantasy's "Lung." Signed to the Warp label, she released the Tan EP, created on Fire Island with Tamer Fahri and Teengirl Fantasy's Nick Weiss, in early 2016. ~ Andy Kellman
