Jenny O.

A singer/songwriter with a warm, wispy voice, Jenny O. has a knack for hooky indie pop/rock with a retro flair. She found fast success in TV licensing with her debut EP, 2010's Home, and by the arrival of her second full-length release, 2017's Peace & Information, she had recorded backing vocals for Father John Misty, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Richard Edwards, just to name a few, while actively touring as a soloist and garnering further sync licensing credits. In the studio, she continued to combine bittersweet indie pop with vintage rock and the occasional light synth pop on releases such as 2020's New Truth and 2023's Spectra. A Long Island native, Jennifer Anne Ognibene studied jazz at SUNY New Platz and composition at Purchase College before moving to the West Coast. There, she joined the short-lived Los Angeles Ladies Choir, whose other members represented indie acts including Warpaint, Pocahaunted, and Lavender Diamond. They recorded an EP, Sing Joyfully, that was released on Teenage Teardrops in 2010. That same year, Ognibene, recording as Jenny O., issued an EP of solo demos titled Home. A pair of the songs were licensed for major automobile TV campaigns, and "Well OK Honey" appeared in an episode of HBO's True Blood, among other placements. Ognibene recorded backing vocals for Father John Misty's 2012 album Fear Fun, and the following year, she released her full-length debut, Automechanic, on her own Holy Trinity Records. It was produced by singer/songwriter Jonathan Wilson and led to an appearance on late-night TV's Last Call with Carson Daly with her band. In 2014, she sang the theme to the ABC/Hulu series Selfie, and later contributed vocals to Jonathan Wilson's 2013 long-player Fanfare. In the meantime, she also recorded with Will Oldham for Bonnie "Prince" Billy releases. The Jenny O. EP Work followed in 2016, and her songs again made their way into video games and series including Orange Is the New Black. Her voice could be heard on Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset, the solo debut of Margot & the Nuclear So-and-So's' Richard Edwards, in March 2017. With Wilson again producing, Jenny O.'s second album, Peace & Information, arrived on Holy Trinity that August. Some of those songs appeared on episodes of series including Showtime's Shameless and the CW's Riverdale. The following year included an appearance on Ingrid Michaelson's album Songs for the Season. During the second half of the 2010s, Jenny O. also toured in support of artists spanning the Proclaimers, Dar Williams, and Tegan and Sara. Signing with Mama Bird Recording Co., Jenny O. returned in 2020 with her third full-length, New Truth. It was produced by Kevin Ratterman (Elliott, Your Black Star). He returned to produce, engineer, mix, and master the songwriter's next album, Spectra, which arrived on Mama Bird Recording Co. in February 2023.
