Divide and Dissolve

Unrelenting and dynamic, Australian duo Divide and Dissolve create an avalanche of sound that combines the creeping dread of sludge metal, blasts of noise, and tension-building passages of avant-classical ambience. Their primarily instrumental sound was inspired by charged sociopolitical ideologies, and their 2020 album Gas Lit explored themes of dismantling white supremacy and oppressive power dynamics. 2023's Systemic was similarly created with intentions of opposing colonialism and working towards Black and Indigenous liberation. Divide and Dissolve consists of drummer Sylvie Nehill and saxophonist/guitarist Takiaya Reed. Both players also use effects to manipulate their sound in a live setting. The band's self-issued first recordings surfaced shortly after they formed, and their full-length debut, Basic, was released by DERO Arcade in March 2017. Their drony, ambient metal sound was joined by the human voice only on Basic's final track, when spoken-word artist Minori Sanchiz-Fung recited a text they'd written over Divide and Dissolve's caustic outpourings. Basic was named Best Heavy Album at the Music Victoria Awards. Second album Abomination followed in 2018, and in 2020, the group released the two-song 7" TFW with Saddle Creek. In January 2021, Invada Records issued the band's third full-length, Gas Lit, with production help from Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson. Chelsea Wolfe and Moor Mother subsequently remixed songs from the album that were released on an EP as well as on a deluxe edition. Divide and Dissolve toured throughout Europe and North America in 2022, opening for Low in addition to headlining shows and festival appearances. Systemic, again produced by Nielson, was released in 2023, with Sanchiz-Fung returning on the track "Kingdom of Fear." Due to personal reasons, Nehill took a break from performing with the band.
