David Orlowsky Trio

The founder and a longtime member of the klezmer-oriented David Orlowsky Trio, clarinetist David Orlowsky has also played classical repertory of various kinds. He was signed to the Warner Classics label and released his debut there in 2022. Orlowsky was born on August 26, 1981, in Tübingen in what was then West Germany. When he was just 16, he founded the David Orlowsky Trio with guitarist Jens-Uwe Popp and double bassist Florian Dohrmann. Known variously as Klezmorim and David Orlowsky's Klezmorim, the group endured for 21 years, performing klezmer music influenced by classical traditions, before disbanding in 2019. Orlowsky studied classical clarinet with Manfred Lindner at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen from 2002 to 2007, traveling next to the Manhattan School of Music in New York for further work with Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima. He is also a composer whose works are published by Schott Music. The David Orlowsky Trio recorded many albums for the Sony Classical label. Three of them won Germany's ECHO Klassik awards in the Classical Without Borders category; these were for the albums David Orlowsky's Klezmorim (2008), Jeremiah (with Singer Pur, 2011), and Klezmer Kings -- A Tribute (2015). On his own, Orlowsky had made recordings and has toured Europe, the Americas, and Asia. He has collaborated with a large variety of artists in diverse media, that includes the Danish String Quartet, the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Vilde Frang, and the Singer Pur, with which he has often performed works by Palestrina. Indeed, he has characterized himself as a vocalist who sings on his instrument. Orlowsky was signed to Warner Classics as a solo artist and, with lutenist David Bergmüller, he released the 2022 album Alter Ego, featuring works by Dowland, Purcell, and others, as well as the duo's original compositions.
