Colin Currie

Colin Currie is a Scottish percussionist known for performing adventurous contemporary repertoire. He has worked closely with composer Steve Reich and recorded and performed many of his compositions. He was born in Edinburgh in 1976, and he started learning the piano when he was five years old. The next year he became inspired to play the drums after seeing legendary jazz drummer Buddy Rich perform, and he started taking drum lessons. Later he developed an interest in orchestral percussion, and from 1990 to 1994, he was a student at the Junior Department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where his percussion instructor was Pamella Dow. This was followed by studies at the Royal Academy of Music. After he graduated in 1998, he released his first recording, Striking a Balance: Percussion Music, which featured the work of Chick Corea, Steve Reich, and others. Two years later, he won the BBC Young Artist Award and became a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist from 2003 to 2005, when he also won the Bortletti Buitoni Trust Award. During this period, he toured the United States with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, and with 11 other musicians he formed the Colin Currie Group to perform the works of Steve Reich. Its repertoire includes Music for Pieces of Wood, Music for 18 Musicians, and several other works. In the 2010s, the ensemble toured extensively and visited France, Germany, and Tokyo. Reich joined the group to perform Clapping Music at a concert in 2014, and in 2017 the CCG crowdfunded a recording of Drumming, which was released in 2018 on the Colin Currie Records label. That same year, Currie formed the Collin Currie Quartet with percussionists Owen Gunnell, Adrian Spillett, and Sam Walton. The quartet is focused on performing the works of Reich and other contemporary composers, including Julia Wolfe and Dave Maric. In 2019 Currie recorded the album Colin Currie & Steve Reich Live at Fondation Louis Vuitton, and later releases include HK Gruber: Percussion Concertos (2021) and Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians (2023). Based in Scotland, Currie continues to be a leading performer of contemporary percussion music.
