Unlike most bands from the death metal 1990s, Sweden's Centinex have shown a steady progression, developing their sound, honing their songs, streamlining their production, and getting rid of anything that didn't work over the course of four previous albums. On Decadence Prophecies of Cosmic Chaos, these cats have upped the ante. Coming off the sheer malevolence of Slayer, and the dynamic finesse of Morbid Angel, with kindred song structures to both Lamb of God and At the Gates, Centinex have issued an album that is punishing, sophisticated, and thunderous. Forsaking the tight restrictions of the genre, they have combined the brutal aggression of death metal's renegade thrash pace, and the melodic and harmonic depth of heavy metal full of knotty stops and starts and insane turnarounds. Standout tracks include "Hollowsphere," "Deathstar Unmasked," "A Dynasty of Obedience," and the buzz saw crunch of "New World Odyssey." This is a winner from start to finish, with plenty of innovation to extend the familiar tropes of the genre; it gives death metal fans something to get excited about again. © Thom Jurek /TiVo
