Bridget Cunningham
Britain's Bridget Cunningham is a versatile figure in the world of early music, active as a conductor, keyboard performer, and researcher. She is also familiar to musical publics in many countries from radio broadcast appearances.
Cunningham attended the University of Southampton, where she took conducting classes and graduated with a music degree with honors in 1996. She went on to the Royal College of Music, where she studied harpsichord, organ, and continuo playing. She graduated in 2002 with a master's degree in Performance Studies. While there, she looked for opportunities to broaden her conducting skills into Baroque music, where the skill overlapped with keyboard playing. She took lessons from or closely observed Baroque conductors, including Christopher Hogwood, attending his rehearsals when he led performances on campus. After graduating, Cunningham continued to perform as a solo harpsichordist for audiences that included Prince Charles and the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace. She has also appeared in France at Maison Hine and the Château de Hautefort and at the London Handel Festival. Cunningham was heard on a broadcast on Austrian radio with pianist Angela Hewitt, and she has also performed on the radio in several other countries, including on Radio France, RTÉ in Ireland, and British networks, including SkyArts, and BBC Radio 3 and 4, as well as BBC television documentaries.
Cunningham's work is centered most prominently on her activities as a conductor. She is the artistic director of London Early Opera, with which she made her recording debut in 2015 with the album Handel in Italy, Vol. 1. She has emerged as a specialist in the music of Handel and in performances that examine specific situations in his career. These include two volumes each of Handel in Italy and Handel at Vauxhall, as well as the 2017 album Handel in Ireland, Vol. 1. She also recorded as a keyboard soloist in 2021 on the album Handel's Eight Great Harpsichord Suites. She has collaborated with the Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi, an all-female group that seeks to re-create the sound of Vivaldi's all-girl groups at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, and with Baroque dance groups such as the Mercurius Company and Les Plaisirs des Nations, performing as far afield as Yale University in the U.S. Cunningham records for Signum Classics, where she led a recording of Handel's pasticcio Caio Fabbricio, HWV A9, in 2022.
