Bleached
Led by Jennifer and Jessie Clavin, Bleached combines the raffish punk of their former band Mika Miko with poppier songwriting and a more polished sound. On their early singles and 2013's full-length debut Ride Your Heart, the Clavins paired rough edges and vulnerable confessions with sweet melodies; later on, they added heft and sheen to their music -- but kept its heartfelt appeal -- on albums including 2019's Don't You Think You've Had Enough?
After Mika Miko disbanded in 2009, Jennifer Clavin took a break from performing music, although she and Jessie continued to write songs together. She moved to New York to pursue her education in fashion design, then spent a stint as Cold Cave's keyboardist and backing vocalist in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile, Jessie remained in the Clavins' home turf of Los Angeles, playing with the band Cold Showers. When Jennifer returned to L.A., the sisters began to work in earnest on Bleached, playing shows with like-minded bands such as Hunx & His Punx and issuing their first single "Francis" on Ooga Booga Records in June 2011. That July, the "Carter" single, which featured the track "Think of You," arrived courtesy of Art Fag. By the time their third release, the limited-edition single "Searching Through the Past" arrived that December on Suicide Squeeze, Bleached had already adopted a cleaner, more structured sound. This more polished style continued on the band's first full-length, 2013's Ride Your Heart, which Dead Oceans released in 2013. A year later, the EP For the Feel followed.
To make their second album, Welcome the Worms, the Clavins and bassist Micayla Grace retreated to a cottage in Joshua Tree, California to write songs about their heartaches and changing lives. Featuring production by Joe Chiccarelli and Carlos de la Garza, Welcome the Worms arrived in 2016. Bleached returned in 2017 with Can You Deal, an EP partly inspired by the sexist questions they encountered while doing press for Welcome the Worms. In addition, Jennifer Clavin compiled a 'zine -- also titled Can You Deal -- that featured thoughts on sexism from artists including Liz Phair, EMA, Lizzo, and Patty Schemel; the net proceeds of the 'zine benefited Planned Parenthood. For their next full-length, the Clavins wrote songs in Los Angeles and Nashville based on their journey to sobriety. Recorded with producer Shane Stoneback with Jessie playing most of the instruments and Jennifer tackling the vocals, Don't You Think You've Had Enough? came out in July 2019.
