Amara La Negra

Amara La Negra is the stage name of singer Dana Danelys de Los Santos, a recording artist and breakout star of VH-1's popular television franchise Love & Hip Hop Miami; she is also a regular guest on The View. Born and raised in the Allapattah section of Miami, the Dominican LatinX artist is best known for singles and performances in which she challenges racial, gender, and sexual stereotypes in the male-dominated reggaeton and urban Latin music genres with her soulful, danceable, militant, AfroLatinidad sound. She has especially challenged many Latin assumptions about race. La Negra was raised by a single mother who worked up to five jobs to make sure her daughter's every need was met. Determined that Amara would become a star, she entered her daughter in a baby beauty pageant at the age of one. The singer and dancer has been in show business ever since. At age six, she was a child star on Univision's Sábado Gigante series. She attended dance classes every day and took acting and modeling classes throughout most of her youth. She studied at several dance academies and arts schools before pursuing music and performing full-time. La Negra's influences were all iconic, first and foremost among them Afro-Cuban legend Celia Cruz, as well as Olga Tanon, Tito Puente, and Milly Quezada. La Negra released her first singles in 2012" "Quitate La Ropa" (feat. DJ Jim Enez) and the first version of "Ayy," her remake of Mulher Melancia's dembow jam, which has since spawned numerous remixes and appeared on several Latin pop compilations. 2013 saw the issue of "Whine," "Brinca la Tablita," and the sex-infused anthem "Muevelo." Subsequently, "Ayy" became a hit in Latin America. The music video for the latter song shows a provocative La Negra exercising her sexual freedom. "Pum Pum" followed in 2014. In 2015, she appeared on Sean Paul's hit club single "All-In" with Mims. Three more singles/videos were issued the following year, which aided her in becoming a concert draw and endeared her to the mainstream of the recording industry: "Se Que Soy," "Lo Que Quiero Es Beber," and Un Contrata de Boca." In 2017, she released "Pa Tu Cama Ni Loca (feat. 2Nyce)," signed on to do Love & Hip Hop Miami, and appeared on J. Misa's dancefloor hit "The Full Moon." In January 2018, La Negra made her debut on Love & Hip Hop, and distinguished herself immediately, not only for her music but for her outspoken comments about racism, sexuality, and colorism. She also signed a multi-album deal with Fast Life Entertainment Worldwide through BMG. Her two pre-release singles and videos, "What a Bam Bam" and "Insecure," both scored on digital and Latin airplay charts and her appearance at that year's SXSW music festival in Austin was among the critical highlights. La Negra also began developing and producing her own television program called Girl Talk. In 2019, she released her debut EP Unstoppable, which included the single "Celebra" featuring Messiah.
