Julian Bliss and James Baillieu present a recording Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Sonatas, Op. 120 and an arrangement of his 4 Ernste Gesänge, Op. 121 arranged by Bliss. These late works were inspired by the great clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld, principal clarinet of the Meiningen Court Orchestra, without whom we would not have had this clarinet repertoire. Julian Bliss is one of the world’s finest clarinetists, excelling as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, jazz artist, masterclass leader and tireless musical explorer. He has inspired a generation of young players as creator of his Conn-Selmer range of affordable clarinets, and introduced a substantial new audience to his instrument. Julian started playing the clarinet aged four, going on to study at the University of Indiana and in Germany under Sabine Meyer, turning professional aged twelve. Described by "The Daily Telegraph" as "in a class of his own", James Baillieu is one of the leading song and chamber music pianists of his generation. He has given solo and chamber recitals throughout the world and collaborates with a wide range of world-class singers and instrumentalists. As a soloist, he has appeared with the Ulster Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, and the Wiener Kammersymphonie. copy; Signum Classics

After "Waiting for Clara", which focused on the music of Brahms and Schumann, this second album on NoMadMusic from the clarinetist Julien Hervé looks back another few years, to the apex of Classical style, with Mozart’s Quintet and Concerto. After discovering the instrument later in his life, Mozart fell entirely in love with it and dedicated these sublime pieces to it. This hedonistic, luminous programme, recorded live, offers us the opportunity to discover - or rediscover - two of the greatest masterpieces in the clarinet repertoire. © NoMadmusic

Jean-Luc Votano, principal clarinet of the Liège Royal Philharmonic (OPRL), here presents a work by a ‘classic’ figure of the twentieth century, the Kammerkonzert for clarinet, string quartet and string orchestra of Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1930), along with two compositions of the twenty-first: Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto, of which Votano gave the Belgian premiere with the OPRL, and Fantasme - Cercles de Mana by Johan Farjot. The latter work, scored for clarinet, viola, cello and orchestra, here receives its world premiere before being performed to a concert hall audience. An album that admirably reflects the virtuosity and musicality of one of the OPRL’s principal soloists. © Fuga Libera/Outhere

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Gramophone Record of the Month - 5 Sterne Fono Forum Klassik - 5 étoiles de Classica
Clarinetist Bernhard Henrik Crusell, who played the first performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, after its posthumous publication, considered himself a Finn despite his Swedish background. He is now regarded as the most prominent Finnish composer before Sibelius, and he wrote a lot for his chosen instrument. The three concertos and the variation set recorded here by Michael Collins, performing and conducting the Swedish Chamber Orchestra (a feat in itself), are virtuoso pieces built on a Mozartian base. Sample the opening movement of the first or the third concerto to assure yourself of Collins' technique. These movements have Mozartian openings that bloom into perilously difficult solo entrances, and Collins executes them without a squawk and even with a bit of charisma and humor. The strongest movements are the slow ones, highly reminiscent of those of the Mozart Concerto and Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581: they are not just similar in overall shape, but have the long-breathed beauty of clarinet writing that Mozart mastered so instinctively with the new instrument, and they're really lovely. In all, this is music that should be part of the general concerto repertory but isn't, and it's gorgeously performed. © TiVo

An unusual and yet particularly clever juxtaposition can be found on this album, which consists in mirroring Schumann’s 1853 Märchenerzählungen (Tales, implicitly for children) for viola, clarinet and piano – as well as, still in the realm of fairy tales, Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) for clarinet and piano and then Märchenbilder (Fairy Tale Pictures) for viola and piano – and Jörg Widmann’s Es war einmal... Fünf Stücke im Märchenton (Once Upon a Time – Five Pieces in a Fairy Tale Tone). While being a contemporary, even a modernist artist, Widmann was indeed largely inspired by Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen, his work sprinkling with reminiscences, allusions and barely disguised quotes, superimposed to today’s language – so much that, at some point, one could be led to believe both tracks were playing at the same time, Schumann’s and Widmann’s! Ever since the first great creators, the art of “recycling”, reusing and rewriting is one of the main driving forces behind artistic creation; in fact Widmann is only following this proven model. Tabea Zimmermann on viola, Dénes Várjon on piano and on clarinet, no other than the composer himself: Widmann of course, not Schumann who, as everyone knows, doesn’t play the clarinet. © SM/Qobuz
