Tony and Gaga Do It Again!

By Marc Zisman |

With "Love For Sale", Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga sign their second album of duets dedicated to the eternal songs of Cole Porter...

Cheek To Cheek was a surprising discographic encounter between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, and was a nice surprise in 2014. The unlikely duo enjoyed revisiting the Great American Songbook (Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington) with mischief, playfulness and a certain class. Against the odds of Father Time, Sinatra's favourite singer proved, at the dawn of his 90th birthday, that he was still an unstoppable crooner. But the real surprise came mainly from Gaga and her singular and seemingly always present tone, who was able to shine in a different context from hits like Poker Face...

Seven years later, the two stars, 60 years apart, take off for a second trip that is as charming as ever, this time devoted exclusively to the repertoire of Cole Porter: Love For Sale. Encased in a gleaming big-band setting of five-star brass and silky strings, the enduring Night & Day, Love For Sale and other I Get a Kick Out of You have the charm of old luxury cars, the softness of leather club chairs and the smoothness of velvet.

No surprises, no formal revolution in the mischievous vocal jousting of these two, just the pleasure of savouring an hour of retro vocal jazz tuned to the chord, just to disconnect from the throes of the present time. Salvation.
