Since Parallels in 2017, we hadn't heard from Nosaj Thing, former resident of the Low End Theory party where the LA Beat Scene was formed in the late 2000s around Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer or Shlohmo. Even counting Covid, that's a bit long. But it was the time that Jason Chung needed to cure his tinnitus, and to reinvent himself. Signed to a new label, the English LuckyMe, he has since changed his way of composing, which leans now more towards sampling. Greater than that, this bedroom producer has reinvented himself as a producer/director, à la Dr. Dre, by surrounding himself with guest artists on this 2022 vintage entitled Continua.
The cast is quite diverse with people close to him like the American electronic singer and producer Julianna Barwick, on the single 'Blue Hour', Toro Y Moi and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, who sings on 'My Soul or Something', a track reminiscent of Massive Attack.
Tracks that are not to be missed are 'Woodland' featuring the rather experimental Brooklyn musician serpentwithfeet, the very cool single 'We Are (우리는)' with the Korean band Hyukoh playing a catchy afrobeats rhythm, as well as the very ethereal collab with Panda Bear on 'All Over'. All in all a very aerial and muffled album in the form of a calling card that will not fail to attract bigger fish in the future.
