Brahms keenly sensed the shadow of Beethoven saying "You do not know what it is like, hearing his footsteps constantly behind one". It was this towering presence that spurred the young Brahms to master his craft and establish his voice. The First Piano Trio in its original form (1854) quoted from Beethoven, but the revised version has no trace of the quote. This work was revised at the end of the composer’s career. The 2nd and 3rd Piano Trios show that Brahms had already achieved complete maturity and his unique voice was established before the revision of the earlier Trio. No. 2 dates from 1880 and No. 3 from 1886. The three musicians on this album have enjoyed playing together for many years and this is the first in a series of recordings that will see all the Brahms' Piano Trios recorded as well as an album exploring Armenian chamber music. © Rubicon Classics

With orchestral concerts on hold, the Linos Piano Trio’s "Stolen Music" project takes inspiration from earlier times and brings distilled versions of great orchestral works to smaller spaces. This album will be the first of an ongoing series, compiling highlights from the trio’s existing arrangements – in this case, intriguing versions of iconic pieces by Debussy, Dukas and Ravel – paired with the inspiration for the group’s founding: Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht. © CAvi-Music

The Feininger Trio, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, present the first in a new series of albums pairing each of the three piano trios written by Brahms with a work by another Viennese composer: Alexander Zemlinsky, Ernst Krenek, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, respectively. Brahms’s piano trios are among the genre’s crowning achievements, and the Feininger Trio were interested in exploring how the piano trio genre developed in the master’s wake. As Alexander Zemlinsky put it, young composers attempted to outdo one another by writing in a vein as Brahmsian as possible. Young Zemlinsky knew Brahms and enjoyed the older composer’s support. He was not Brahms’s pupil, but his early Piano Trio, Op. 3 has much in common with Brahms. © CAvi-Music

Philippe Cassard, Anne Gastinel and David Grimal present these two Beethovenian masterpieces. The chosen approach is one of colour and generosity. On this astonishing disc we meet a Beethoven come down from his pedestal, who is human and even jovial. Where so many others offer rigidity of discourse and fussy sonorities, the three musicians illuminate these metaphysical pages with the finesse, freshness and grace of the aquarellist. © La Dolce Volta

Rachmaninoff's output of chamber music is small but all the more precious for that. Two absolute gems bear witness to the fact: these ‘elegiac trios’, which were produced by a young composer still indisputably under the influence of Tchaikovsky. But Rachmaninoff’s personality is already fully present, reaching heights of emotion and expressiveness. The pieces by Suk and Grieg add a further touch of character to the picture, which is painted with an exceptionally rich palette: the artistry of the phenomenal Trio Wanderer! © harmonia mundi

The three pieces the Smetana Trio have selected for their new album came into being within the range of a mere four years, yet they represent three different musical universes. Anton Arensky’s Piano Trio evokes the atmosphere of the 19th-century salons, where music was played to delight the gathered bourgeoisie company. The work Alexander Zemlinsky created at the age of 25 marks the accession of the seeking of new sound and harmony. The one-movement trio Sergei Rachmaninoff, a piano virtuoso and composer rolled into one, wrote when hew was 19, teems with elegiac nobleness, which would remain the quintessential trait of the future globetrotter’s music. And whereas Arensky’s short life was marred by inner turmoil, the paths of Zemlinsky and Rachmaninoff were affected by outer circumstances – both of them died within a year, far away from their respective homelands, in the United States. With their typical vivacity and zest, the internationally renowned Smetana Trio perform three remarkable compositions dating from the late 19th century. © Supraphon

Joseph on the violin, Justine on the cello and Victor on the piano won the first prize of the International Joseph Haydn Competition in Vienna in 2017, one of the most prestigious awards they could ever get. The Trio Metral is indeed a young promising ensemble which is made up of siblings. Their energy and sensitivity are equally breathtaking. Concrete evidence of this talent is given in their first album in which they play Mendelssohn's Piano Trios. The dark atmosphere of those two works progresses towards a luminous vitality. A dramatic architecture that the three musicians act with an intensity that reflects an already strong artistic temper. Born in the imagination of a precocious composer, the programme perfectly fits the Trio Metral. A young ensemble to discover ... and to follow! © Aparté / Little Tribeca
