Louis Spohr’s reputation as one of Germany’s leading violinists was at its height when he composed his Duets for Two Violins, Op. 39, and while it appears his intention was to finance an Italian concert tour with marketable duets, the publishers complained of their technical difficulty. Spohr defended this aspect by stating his ‘desire to give my duets more inner value, more richness of harmony’ than is usual in this genre. Indeed, a contemporary critic exclaimed that ‘it is no exaggeration to say that the ideas and artistry required for these works would be sufficient… to create three concertos.’ © Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Choc de Classica - Hi-Res Audio
Once regarded as the equal of Beethoven, Louis Spohr was a prominent figure in European music for the first half of the 19th century, admired for his prodigious skills as a violin virtuoso as well as for his conducting and composing. Yet his music fell into obscurity for many decades, and few of his works were regularly played until the Spohr revival of the late 20th century. Among the works that have entered the standard repertoire, the four clarinet concertos have achieved a kind of fame comparable to the clarinet works of Carl Maria von Weber and are approaching them in availability of recordings. Paul Meyer, known for his broad coverage of major and minor clarinet works and ability to play them with grace and polish, presents the clarinet concertos in a double-disc package that is desirable for having all the works together. More importantly, Meyer's performances with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra are highly attractive for their warmth and charm, characteristics that should win a wide audience beyond the expected followers of clarinet music. There is an appealing give-and-take between Meyer and the orchestra, no doubt because his conducting allows for spontaneity, as well as a coherent dialog between the soloist and the accompaniment. The sound of these 2012 recordings is warm and inviting, and the vibrant acoustics give the music a delightful ambience. © TiVo

Hi-Res Booklet
As one of the greatest violinists of the early 19th century, Louis Spohr was rivaled only by Niccolò Paganini, and his violin concertos and chamber works that feature a prominent violin part were clearly designed for his own talents. Even in such small-scale works as his Three Duets for two violins, Op. 67 (1824), Spohr's love of flashy repartée and elaborate ornamentation show that they were, first and foremost, written for his own abilities. Yet because the two violin parts are fairly evenly matched, alternating the same material and each playing off the other's virtuosity, they require two violinists of equal skill and imagination. For this 2018 Naxos release, the first volume of a series, Jameson Cooper and James Dickenson are evenly matched, and the often difficult interplay between them makes it hard to hear any problems, though much of that is due to Spohr's tendency to write busy parts with few rests. The closing work, Three Duets for two violins, WoO 21 (ca. 1796), is a piece of juvenilia written when Spohr was only 12, so it is easier to find fault with his compositional techniques, though not with the performance. Cooper and Dickenson elevate these slight miniatures to a level of sophistication that disguises their formal weaknesses and emphasizes their clever ideas. Naxos provides close-up recording that captures every detail with clarity and warmth. © TiVo
