The musicians of Northern Europe have always brought their personal Arctic twist to all genres of music, and the world of electronic music is no exception. Here’s an overview of 11 Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish artists who have taken techno, house, disco and dub towards new horizons.
At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence.
Around thirty years ago, Seattle became the epicenter of the rock scene, largely thanks to grunge music. The grungy, ‘I don’t care’ attitude rose from the ashes of punk, heavy metal and alt-rock, and instantaneously went from an underground movement to a worldwide success. Perhaps too quickly embraced by the very system it rebuffed, it almost became a caricature of itself by the end of the 1990s. Let’s look back at ten albums that defined the genre.
