Anyone needing proof that music can cross all borders, or that Americana has become a world music genre, need look no further than the emerging Nordicana scene. Inspired by the country rock/folk/classic-country genre called Americana and idolizing Nashville as its holy city, English-speaking musicians from the high, wide and handsome plains of Norway having been making the trek to Tennessee's capital to immerse themselves in the experience—none more successfully than Malin Pettersen. While it's easy to poke fun at Norwegians who write songs about digging diamonds in Arkansas, ("Arkansas"), this is actually credible stuff. Pettersen has clearly tapped into some of the seminal spirituality behind the best Americana: the plain-spoken honesty and native emotions, pedal steel guitars and the occasional fiddle. Formerly the lead singer for the band Lucky Lips, Pettersen, who's gently influenced by Bobbie Gentry and says she fascinated by America's "many worlds in one," is gifted with an eloquent, high but deceptively evocative voice—one in the mold of Alison Krauss or Dolly Parton (though not as ringing and pure as Dolly). She is also a songwriter brimming with potential. This combination of budding talents led her to Nashville's Americana community where she recorded this mostly acoustic set live, in whole band takes, with a coterie of young talents such as Aaron Goodrich (Colter Wall), Misa Arriaga (Kacey Musgraves’ guitarist and ex- boyfriend) and Eddy Dunlap (Luke Bryan). Opening with the magnetic sway of a pedal steel guitar, "California," the album's first track, is her obligatory, rite-of-passage country rock homage to the other mystic home of Americana music. "Hometown," is the album's restless-with-"the same old people, same old scene"-leaving-my-hometown kvetch. Smoothly sliding through the yearning verses of Arriaga's "Holding Lonely," Pettersen makes her best Orbison moves stick. And with a jaunty rhythm and an assist from plate reverb, Pettersen shows her knowledge of countrypolitan and the work of Charlie Rich among others by nailing the funky, "Mr. Memory," a tune co-written by Ryan A. Keith and up-and-coming Bay Area singer/songwriter Logan Ledger. A sincere and tremendously talented new voice that stands out in the crowded Americana universe. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
