Recorded in concert by the audiophile label PentaTone, Marek Janowski's brilliant performances of Richard Wagner's ten mature operas were issued as hybrid SACDs between 2011 and 2013, in celebration of the composer's bicentennial year. The most famous concert excerpts are presented here in the multichannel format, and include overtures, preludes, and orchestral music from Der fliegende Holländer, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal, and Wagner's masterpiece, Der Ring des Nibelungen. The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is exemplary in its dynamic performances showcasing Wagner's splendid orchestration, and the exceptional playing and high-quality engineering are apparent in the deep and rich sound of this package. There are many compilations of Wagner's greatest hits, including some of comparable musicianship and historical value, but few can match this generous collection for the excitement of the live performances and the spaciousness of the reproduction. Highly recommended, especially for anyone looking for a first-rate introduction to Wagner.

Peter Thomas in Orbit

In Germany they have their own Michel Legrand: his name is Peter Thomas! His eccentric film music left its mark on a whole generation of viewers in the 60s and 70s and since the 90s he has often been cited and sampled by young pop groups. The cult composer passed away on May 17th, 2020. We met him three years earlier, on the dawn of his 92nd birthday.

Nils Frahm, An Atypical Piano Master

Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of the electronic genre, Nils Frahm’s talent has brought harmony between the two worlds for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.

Women Composers: A Secret History

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho, music history has been marked by female figures who “dared” to write music. Is creation a male privilege? Our sound museum does hold more well-known and recognised male than female composers. Yet their works are no less exciting and there is absolutely no reason for them to play second fiddle, or be ignored altogether. Below, you’ll find a defence and illustration of female composition works through eleven musical portraits.
