Done are the conflations with Interpol: the British Editors have finally taken off. The programme includes: civilized rock rather than frankly violent, just to make their album title lie. Violence bursts out left and right: pop for the big nights à la Arcade Fire on Magazine, grump ballad with No Sound But The Wind, 80s synthesizers on Counting Spooks. More controlled, more thought out, this fifth opus benefits from the input of Benjamin John Powers aka Blanck Mass, one half of Fuck Buttons, whose brutal but melodic noise of World Eater (2017) had caused the excitement of singer Tom Smith. To avoid diving into the extreme, Editors called someone else, the prolific Leo Abrahams—who often works behind the scenes with Brian Eno, David Byrne and Carl Barât—to rebalance it as a whole. It’s a big surprise. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Nordic Jazz in 10 Albums

Snowy scenes, big expanses, beautiful nature everywhere… Scandinavia is often described by the same old clichés. Jazz is no exception. We tend to talk about Scandi jazz like it’s one big genre. However, each country has its own distinct style; Denmark’s scene rivals traditional North American jazz, Norway tends to get experimental and Sweden treads the line between the two. Nordic musicians have been adding their own unique touch to the genre since the 70s and the younger generation continue to sculpt its future. Here, we zoom in on Scandinavian jazz in 10 albums, offering a glimpse into a discography that’s as wide as a fjord.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.
