Noel McGhie, a little-known Anglo-Jamaican drummer who is hugely popular with free jazz fans, moved to Paris in the early 70s. A worthy heir to Max Roach and Rashied Ali, McGhie even composed music for the Spaniard Fernando Arrabal and became Steve Lacy’s favourite drummer, another exile in the French capital. Other avant-garde musicians soon called on him: François Tusques, Archie Shepp, Bobby Few, Byard Lancaster, Mal Waldron, Anthony Braxton, Alan Silva and Chico Freeman. In 1971, McGhie even featured on Colette Magny’s album Répression! Surprisingly, his album Trapeze (released in 1975) was more like funk than free jazz. With saxophonist Jorge Joao, trumpeter Itaru Oki, electric pianist Georges-Edouard Nouel and bassist Louis Xavier, he produced a wonderful, groovy, 70’s-style score that way surpassed most American productions of that time. A jazz fusion gem that should be rediscovered immediately! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.
