In the title of this album from Zach Saginaw aka Shigeto, the word New is essential. A reference to the evening Monday Is The New Monday which he hosts at the Motor City Wine in Detroit, it also marks a return to the fold for the DJ/tinkerer. Is it a new life? After years in New York, Shigeto has come back to his native Michigan to revitalize himself and find a new inspiration by drawing into his own roots. The roots of a city—Detroit—in reconstruction and that has never ceased to be a musical lab throughout the 20th century. The roots also of a local community that he wants to support and enrich. Released as always by Ghostly, The New Monday reveals a fortified Shigeto. Here, his downtempo and abstract hip hop habits shift even more towards the dancefloor. A dancefloor obviously subtle, sophisticated and nuanced. Without being pure electro music, pure jazz, pure hip hop, pure soul but being all of that at the same time, the album is the captivating snapshot of a city at a turning point of its history.
