Lost boy. Now isn’t that a misnomer? YBN Cordae, AKA Cordae Dunston, the young rapper from NC, certainly doesn’t fit the bill at a glance. After several successful collaborations with the YBN collective, the release of his critically acclaimed single Old Niggas in 2018, as well as his appearance on the cover of XXL magazine in June, here’s his first full-length release. Still doesn’t ring a bell? He also collaborated with Orelsan on Tout ce que je sais in 2017. At 21 years of age, Cordae has already made a name for himself on the East Coast as well as France.
Lost Boy’s major themes touch upon his path, as he revisits his troubled childhood, never skimping on comparisons in order to demonstrate how he represents a new generation of rappers. On We Gon Make It, with Meek Mill, he claims “I’m Savior of the rap shit, the leader of the renaissance” ; elsewhere, on Bad Idea, he jokes about student life as if to highlight everything he’s accomplished: “Uh, ramen noodles on the regular/ Add some seasoning and some hot sauce for a better touch/ Peanut butter, jelly and syrup sandwich, etcetera”. Chance The Rapper’s feature is only the first in a long list of names: Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla $ign, Pusha T, Arin Ray, add some valuable cachet to the young star’s first album.
