Neo Soul in 10 Albums

In the midst of the 90s when hip-hop was going through its golden age, a revolution within soul music was also underway. With Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many others, the genre found again its class: an echo of the simplicity and refinement that brought to life the albums of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Roberta Flack. After years in the shadow of the reigning ultra-commercial and soft R&B, the noticeably more underground Neo Soul, or Nu Soul, relit the flame of soul music and returned it to its roots in terms of both composition and lyricism. So, without further ado, here are ten women who are making an impact on the world of jazz.

ECM in 10 Albums

“The most beautiful sound next to silence.” That’s been ECM’s motto for the past fifty years. Manfred Eicher, the charismatic founder of the Munich label, seems to live in a parallel universe. And jazz sounds different on planet ECM. It is often thanks to this label that artists such as Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea have recorded their best records. Even more so than with Blue Note or Impulse! Limiting the whole history of this extraordinary label to just 10 records would be mission impossible. So, these 10 albums will tell not “the” story but “a” story of ECM.
