Violinist Piotr Plawner continues in his quest to provide listeners with a magnificent collection of the violin works of Karol Szymanowski. This album is the second volume of works for violin and piano. Szymanowski's literature is inexcusably absent from recital halls, and this album features most of the obscure ones. While there are plenty of composers out there whose "unheard" works are dormant for a reason, such is not the case with Szymanowski. His close working relationship with violinist Paul Kochanski ensured that everything Szymanowski wrote for the violin was completely idiomatic to the instrument and filled with his characteristic Polish passion and introspection. The majority of the works on this album is actually transcriptions Szymanowski made of his own works. In the case of the three Paganini Caprices, it is not sufficient to say that Szymanowski merely "arranged" these works for violin and piano. They are more likely a very sophisticated and thoroughly engaging exploration based on Paganini's themes. Throughout the album, Plawner gives these obscure pieces precisely what they need: immense amounts of conviction and assuredness that convince listeners of the importance of each track. Intonation, musical interpretation, and technique are superior as is the interplay between Plawner and pianist Wojciech Switala. This album is another must-have for anyone seeking to broaden the collection of violin repertoire.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.

Marc Ribot, the Anti-guitar Hero

For over thirty-five years, Marc Ribot’s name has been on the covers of albums by Tom Waits, Alain Bashung, Diana Krall, John Zorn, Robert Plant, Caetano Veloso and numerous other artists, and when he's not busy lending his unique guitar to others, the New Yorker takes pleasure, under his own name, in breaking down and re-building rock, jazz, funk, Cuban music and anything his fingers touch.
