Founded in 1983 by Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, the Throwing Muses spearheaded the U.S. indie rock scene during their short decade of activity. Of a similar ilk to Pixies and The Breeders, they reached a sort of climax in 1991 with The Real Ramona, a third album which would be Donelly’s last as she left to start her own band, Belly… After several breaks and reformations, Hersh brought the Boston cult band back together with David Narcizo, the original drummer, and Bernard Georges, bassist since 1992. Several minutes into Sun Racket it seems that time has frozen still, with the perfect balance between electrical tension and poetic dreaminess. Throwing Muses are as strong as ever, as are their changes of rhythm, psychedelic sparks and Kristin Hersh’s unique vocals. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

J.J. Cale: Big Brother o' Blues

More than eight years after his death, there is still no getting away from the vital wellspring of music that is the works of J.J. Cale. With his unique alloy of blues, folk, country and jazz, the man worshipped by Clapton, who lived for a while in a trailer, is still one of rock's most influential hermits.

Ray Charles, a Stylist Under the Influence

A founding father of soul, whose career spanned half a century, Ray Charles cannot be reduced to a handful of famous hits. He is above all the master of the high-end musical crossover that makes an art of mixing genres, approaching one to better embrace the other. Ray Charles secularised gospel, enriched the blues, played jazz, sang country and approached rock'n'roll. Let's take a look back at his unique style based on the five listed here.

The Doors, Jim Morrison’s Orchestra

Fifty years ago, on 3 July 1971, Jim Morrison died mysteriously in a Parisian bathtub, survived by his three partners: Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore, who had worked tirelessly for six years to translate his dreams into music.
